Description
The Digby War Memorial is a First World War memorial, with later additions for the Second World War, erected in 1920. It is made of pink Aberdeen Granite and stands on a concrete base. The memorial has a square plan and is prominently located by the roadside within the churchyard of the Church of St Thomas a Becket, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial features a rounded, inscribed cross that stands on an inscribed square plinth. Below the plinth, there is a two-stepped concrete base. The inscription on the front of the base reads: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ MEN OF THIS PARISH, WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR JUSTICE, KING, AND COUNTRY,/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918./ THIS MONUMENT IS SET UP BY THE PARISHIONERS OF DIGBY.’ The front of the cross is inscribed with the words: ‘THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.’
On the rear of the base, the inscription reads: ‘ALSO IN MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN WAR 1939-1945/ NAMES.’ The opposite sides of the base are also inscribed with the word ‘NAMES.’ All inscriptions are in white lettering.
