Description
No. 85 Canwick Road is an office and showroom built in 1899, designed by William Mortimer of Lincoln for J Daniels of Fambrini & Daniels, Architectural Modellers. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring elaborate terracotta and stone decorations, and has Welsh slate roofs.
The exterior is two stories high with a moulded plinth. The street front includes two windows in a two-story projecting square bay window. The ground floor has plain sash windows with short upper columns that have ornate capitals, supporting a serpentine lintel with moulded bands behind. Above this, there are two moulded bands running across the entire facade, with rectangular panels; the central panel features a foliage pattern, while the outer panels display sunflowers. The upper section has two segment-headed sash windows with elaborate keystones and moulded hoods with stops, flanked by pilaster strips. The eaves cornice is adorned with decorative corbels and banding, and above it, the parapet features a projecting panel decorated with a pendant flag and wreath. The rainwater heads are designed in the form of monstrous heads. The side entrance facade showcases similar elaborate architectural details and is topped with a panel bearing the Lincoln City coat of arms, which is surmounted by a segmental pediment that bears the date 1889.
