Description

Wesleyan Day School, now disused and partly demolished, was built in 1859 by Bellamy & Hardy, with a late 19th-century rear addition. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring yellow brick and stone dressings, and has slate and concrete tile roofs in an Italianate style.

The exterior includes a plinth, hoodmoulds, an impost band, a diaper-work frieze, dentilled eaves, and pedimented gables. The main block is two storeys high and has an attached tower, with the former schoolroom located to the north and only the front wall remaining of the south range. The main block is arranged in an L-plan with nine bays. To the left, there is a slightly projecting pedimented wing that features a canted bay window and round-headed windows, with a triple round-headed window above. To the right, set back, is a square tower with three stages, which includes a first-floor band, ribbed clasping pilasters, a bracketed eaves cornice, and pedimented gables. The first stage of the tower has a segment-headed carriage opening with a tablet above it inscribed "Entrance to boys' school," and a round-headed window above that. The bell stage features a single pointed-arched opening on each side and a datestone on the east side. At the top, there is a square clock turret with a square ogee lead roof and a weather vane.

The schoolroom has five round-headed two-light casements, with the one to the right set in a slightly projecting pedimented bay. The south range includes a pedimented bay to the right with a blocked carriage opening above which is a tablet inscribed "Infants' and Girls' schools." To the left of this bay, there is a small round-headed window and a larger one next to it. A single-storey rear addition, consisting of seven bays, has glazing bar windows. The interior has not been inspected.
