Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a disused parish church located in Sutterby, dating from the 12th and 14th centuries. It is constructed of dressed green stone, with some areas of red brick patching, and has slate roofs. The building comprises a nave, a south porch, and a chancel.
The west wall features a single blocked window opening, and the apex of this wall is made of brick with a moulded ashlar band extending beneath it. On the north side of the nave, there is a single 12th-century round chamfered arched blocked doorway with impost blocks, accompanied by a blocked rectangular window to the left. The east chancel has a window with three trefoil arched and cusped lights set under a flat arch, with a segmental brick arch above. The south wall of the chancel contains a similar two-light window.
On the south side of the nave, there is a single red brick buttress, and to the left, a 14th-century window with two arched and cusped lights under a flat arch. Further left is the gabled porch, which features a 14th-century ogee arched entrance with two mouchettes above it and an inner chamfered arched doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
