Description

The Cottage is a mid-18th century cottage with 19th century alterations, located on the south side of Back Lane in Little Steeping. It features a colourwashed mud and stud construction with a brick plinth and a half hipped thatched roof covered in corrugated iron sheeting. There is a single central red brick chimney stack, with an additional later stack added to the left. The cottage is a single storey with a garret and has a lobby entrance plan.

The main facade has three windows, with a central plank door flanked by single glazing bar sash windows that have segmental heads. The left side of the building has a single two-light sliding sash window with overlapping panes of glass. The right side features a two-light sliding sash window on each floor, both with glazing bars.

At the rear, there is a continuous low catslide extension with a low brick outer wall, built in two stages; the right section has a pantile roof, while the left section includes a small off-centre fixed window.

Inside, the cottage retains its original two-room plan with a central stack and lobby entrance. There is an original wooden winder staircase located behind the stack, along with original two-panel doors. The simple roof structure, which is largely original, supports the thatched roof.

This cottage is a remarkably well-preserved example of the once common local mud and stud cottages, which are now very rare in Lindsey, particularly in this unaltered form.
