Description
The Church of St. Margaret is a parish church, now closed, built in 1863 by John Atkinson of York. It is constructed from squared grey sandstone rubble with limestone dressings and features slate roofs with stone coped gables and crosses fleury. The church includes a western tower, nave, chancel, south porch, and vestry.
The two-stage tower slightly projects from the west end of the nave and has two stepped buttresses that support a blank pointed arch. The west window has two lights with a trefoil above and a quatrefoil above that. The belfry stage features paired lancets facing the main directions and is topped with a broached spire. The north wall has three paired lancets and a single lancet window, while a chimney with an ashlar stack is located at the northeast angle of the nave. The vestry has a single east window.
The chancel's east window consists of three pointed lights under a hood mould with label stops. The south wall of the chancel has two lancets with hood moulds that have carved decorative label stops depicting birds and animals. The nave's south wall contains two pairs of flush lancets, and the gabled south porch features a single hollow chamfered order to the pointed doorway, complete with a hood mould and label stops, as well as a single chamfered inner doorway.
Inside, the font, pulpit, and a relief of St. Margaret were all carved in stone by the vicar, Rev. Charles Pratt Terrot. There are also monuments to the Philips family, one from 1715 featuring putto heads and a skull, and another from 1720 that is more architectural with pilasters. This family resided at Hall Farm, Wispington from the late 16th century until 1720.
