Description

The brick kiln at the Anchorage is a Scotch type kiln built around 1800, with some minor alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick and has a rectangular shape. The structure is single storey with battered side walls and buttresses, featuring eight flues on each side. On the left end, there is a wide 20th-century opening, likely an enlargement of the original access, topped with a pent corrugated iron roof. This opening is flanked by two original battered buttresses. Inside, the kiln has a slightly pointed brick vault with narrow vent slots arranged in eight pairs between the flues, positioned at a higher level. At the apex of the vault, there are nine small square ventilator holes. Aside from the enlarged opening and some cracking due to thermal stress on the side walls, the kiln is in good condition and represents a notably complete example of a once common building type. The original brick pits can be seen to the east of the kiln, and a brick kiln is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map from 1806.
