Description

The west tower of the former Church of St. Peter, dating from the late 15th century with 20th-century alterations, is constructed of limestone ashlar, coursed greenstone rubble, and some red brick. This three-stage tower features four-stage angle buttresses with multiple set-offs. The west front includes a pointed doorway with a richly moulded head and a fragmentary hood mould that has been blocked with red brick. Above this is a moulded string course and a large pointed window with four pointed cusped lights, intricate vertical tracery, a bowtell moulded surround, and a hood mould.

The tower has bell openings on the west, north, and south sides, each with a pointed head, two cusped round-headed lights, panel tracery, and a bowtell moulded surround, topped by a moulded eaves. The north side has been largely rebuilt in the 20th century with greenstone and features a narrow, deeply splayed rectangular window with a chamfered surround, alongside a plaque commemorating Mark Stubbs, who died in 1977 and contributed funds for the tower's maintenance.

On the east side, there is a pointed tower arch with moulded imposts that has been blocked with red brick, and above it is the moulded roof line of the original nave gable. The polygonal southeast stair turret, patched in 20th-century greenstone, has a three-stage buttress on the southwest and two 15th-century slit lights. A 15th-century doorway on the north side of the stair turret features a large stone lintel and plain jambs. Inside, the east tower arch has a pointed double chamfered head, plain moulded capitals, and double chamfered jambs.
