Description

Tathwell Hall is a house dating from 1842. It is constructed from stock brick with ashlar dressings, and has a flat asphalt roof with three brick stacks, and a slate roof to the rear. The building features projecting ashlar eaves and a rendered parapet, and is arranged on a square plan.

The south-west front has three bays and a deep plinth, with a deep brick first-floor band extending to an ashlar sill band. The central doorway has a recessed ashlar porch with four rectangular columns, a broad entablature, and a balustrade above. Wall pilasters mirror the columns. Above the door is an overlight, flanked by narrow lights and a panelled door. Long glazing bar sashes flank the doorway, with eared architraves. Two glazing bar sashes are positioned above, each with a moulded ashlar architrave, in addition to a pair of glazed doors with marginal and overlights, again with a moulded ashlar architrave. The north-east and south-east fronts are identical in appearance, featuring a deep plinth and a broad first-floor band extending to an ashlar sill band. Broad, two-storey projecting bands define the flanking bays. A central group of single long glazing bar sashes marks the centre, flanked by a glazed door; this is divided by ashlar pilasters and topped by a broad entablature. Single glazing bar sashes are positioned either side, with eared moulded architraves. Three glazing bar sashes sit above, each with a moulded architrave. A truncated, unremarkable servants' wing extends to the rear.

Inside, a three-flight return staircase has wrought iron curling bannisters, carved tread ends, and a mahogany hand rail. The ground floor doorcases are detailed with pediments and pilasters, and moulded cornices are present throughout.
