Description
The Sutton on Sea War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and altered after the Second World War. It was relocated following the East Coast floods of 1953 and re-dedicated in 1955. The memorial is made of Portland stone and is situated at the center of a small, irregularly shaped garden, facing south-west, with the pullover and seafront behind it to the east.
The memorial features a substantial stone monolith or pillar set on a low base that is three courses high. Each face of the memorial has blocks that project to form crosses, and on the south-eastern face, the words 'pro patria' are carved into the stone. The south-west face includes a plaque with the inscription:
IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ NAMES/ TRUSTHORPE/ NAMES/ 1939 - 1945/ NAMES/ OTHER ARMED CONFLICTS/ NAMES/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
The memorial stands on a wide stone platform surrounded by low metal railings. The garden features low walls made of rock-faced stone, which vary in height and have an irregular pattern.
