Description
The Buttercross, which was later adapted into a dovecote, is now a village hall located on Main Street in Burwell. It dates from around 1700, with mid-19th century and 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick and features an octagonal slate roof from the 19th century, which has chevroned brick eaves and a plain octagonal cupola. The structure has an octagonal plan, with each side containing a single blocked, semi-circular headed opening that has moulded imposts. Above each blocked opening is a continuous flat band topped with a moulded pediment. The east side has a 20th century doorway that has been inserted, featuring a panelled door flanked by weatherboarding. This doorway is accompanied by single 19th century semi-circular headed windows that have 20th century glazing bar casements. The north and south sides are blind, while the west side has three 19th century semi-circular headed windows, also with 20th century glazing bar casements.
