Description
The barn at Halstead Hall Farm is a Grade II* listed building that originally served as a gatehouse to Halstead Hall. It dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is built of red brick in English bond, featuring some decorative diaper work with dark headers, and has a pantile roof.
The barn has a two-storey front that originally consisted of four bays. The central area has been modified to include a set of modern double doors, likely replacing the original gateway. To the left, there is a low-level louvred opening from the 20th century, with a ventilator above it. On the first floor, there is a 19th-century fixed light window with a cambered brick head, and to the right, a 20th-century fixed light window with a wooden lintel.
Beneath the eaves, three 16th-century windows can be found, each with moulded brick surrounds and four-centred arched heads, topped with square brick labels. A fourth similar opening has been enlarged in the 19th century to create access for a granary, featuring a planked door. The extensive and well-preserved diaper work on the left side of the building includes a continuous pattern of lozenges beneath the eaves.
At the rear of the barn, there is a large blocked arch with a low four-centred head and a double chamfered surround. To the left, there is a lower, narrower pedestrian opening with a pointed head, alongside two narrow pointed lights, one of which has been altered in the 20th century. Above these, four openings matching those on the front are present, three of which are blocked, while one contains a fixed light window.
