Description
The drainage mill at Spinney Farm is a drainage tower mill built around 1800, which was converted to steam power in the late 19th century. It features a red brick structure with a tarred, facetted slate roof that has lead dressings. The mill has a circular plan and a squat tower that has been reduced to half its original height, with a single planked door. On the right side, there is a large timber scoopwheel, reinforced with iron bands and numbered spokes, set in a narrow splayed channel and mounted on a large grit stone block. On the left side, an iron flywheel is present for driving by a traction engine. The interior has not been inspected. This mill is notable as the only remaining pumping windmill on Holland Fen and was operational, powered by a tractor, until around 1960.
