Description
South Lodge is a gate lodge that dates from the late 18th century, originally serving the former park of Stoughton Grange, which has since been demolished. The building is finished in white stucco with black painted details and features a pyramidal slate roof with a central stack that has moulded capping. There is a projecting wing with a hipped roof and a chimney stack on the west side.
The entrance front has an asymmetrically placed doorway, a blind window, and a single lancet window to the right, which includes angle shafts, capitals, and arch moulding. At either end of the front, there are large pointed arches set in niches of identical design. The south elevation, which faces the road, consists of three bays, with the wider central bay slightly recessed, featuring a triple lancet window. There is a single light window on each side and a central double light window, all with ornate glazing bars. The west wing contains a double faucet window, which has been altered. The design of this lodge is a reduced and simplified version of the elevations of Stoughton Grange from the late 18th century. Remnants of blocked niches remain below the render of the south elevation.
