Manor House Farmhouse with Outbuildings Attached to Rear

This is a farmhouse with attached outbuildings, dating back to the 16th century, located in Long Whatton. The right wing of the house was built around 1600, with its front gable rebuilt in the early 20th century. The left wing, incorporating a rear outshot, dates to the 18th century, and a mid-18th century rear wing includes a dovecote.

The right wing exhibits timber framing with close diagonal studding visible on its right side, with later brick infill and a granite rubble plinth. The front gable was reconstructed in red brick, decorated with blue brick diapering. The left wing is constructed from red brick with vitreous headers, arranged in a chequered pattern on the upper storey. It also has a rubble stone plinth, chamfered coping, dressed stone quoins, and stone gable copings. The roofs are covered in Swithland slate, and the brick chimneys were rebuilt in the 19th century, featuring three square shafts linked by offset caps. The farmhouse is two storeys and an attic, with three bays facing the front. The right bay projects. The left bays have cogged brick string courses at the first and second floor levels, with similar short strings above the attic windows. Windows are 19th and 20th-century horizontal sash windows with glazing bars; 3-light windows on the main floors and 2-light windows in the attic. A blocked single light window is located on the first floor between the left bays, above a 20th-century door within a banded stone surround with a stone lintel.

The rear wing is two storeys high, incorporating a granite rubble ground floor and a brick upper storey with offset eaves. External brick steps lead to a storage room above the kitchen, and the far end of the wing has a garage below and a dovecote above, with 15th-century nesting boxes. Each row of boxes has a cogged brick ledge.

Inside the right wing, a winder staircase leads to the attic, and there are timber-framed partition walls. The first-floor room retains a moulded spine beam. The left wing follows a lobby entry plan with a central chimney and timber-framed partitions between the main rooms and the outshot. The ground floor left room features a spine beam and decorated joists. The ground floor right room has a moulded spine and joists. Re-used 17th-century moulded panels decorate a room on the first floor to the right. The kitchen contains heavy rough joists and a roughly arched fireplace lintel.
