Description

Abingdon Lodge is a late 18th-century house located on the west side of Sweptstone School Lane in Newton Burgoland. The house is constructed of red brick with dentilled brick eaves and a pediment. It has a slate roof with rebuilt brick end stacks. The main facade features three storeys and three windows, with brick pilasters at the angles and a central, slightly projecting section topped with a pediment. The windows are replacements of a “sash type”, set beneath flat, gauged brick lintels. Painted stone sills are present. The central doorway is round-headed with a fanlight set within a recessed arch, a prominent impost band, and a first-floor sill band. The left end of the house is blank, while the right end has a 20th-century window set below a cambered lintel and a 20th-century sash window in the attic. The rear elevation has two outshuts, and two further windows similar in style to those at the front. A less significant wing adjoins the main house at the rear.
