Description

The Church of St. Mary is a parish church dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, with restoration around 1850. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble. The church features a west tower topped with a fine recessed spire and has traceried lights, along with a round stair turret. The south aisle is built in the Perpendicular style and includes a polygonal stair tower at the west end, as well as a cornice adorned with carved decorative heads. The decorative window tracery appears to be a 19th-century renewal. The windows have external hood-moulds, some of which are supported by corbel heads. The north aisle has a ball flower cornice. Inside, the church has an arcaded interior that contains various pieces of Flemish and English woodwork from the 17th century. The west window features stained glass from around 1500, which was brought from Rouen by Sir George Beaumont. Additionally, there is a monument to Sir Thomas Beaumont, who died in 1607, made of alabaster and featuring reclining effigies in a recess.
