Description
The grotto and associated pool, located southeast of Coleorton Hall, were constructed in 1806, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. Designed by William Wordsworth and built under his supervision for Sir George Beaumont, the grotto features shellwork created by Dorothy Wordsworth. It is made from brick and dressed stone, likely salvaged from builders' rubble found on the site. Inside the grotto, there is a semicircular arched recess that was once faced with tufa and contains fragmentary remains of shellwork. The floor is pebbled in a star pattern. To the right, stone steps lead down to a pebbled path that borders the pool. The circular pool has a diameter of approximately 5 meters and features plain edging, with a central fountain designed as a vase. The grotto is a prominent feature of the winter garden designed by Wordsworth and plays an important role in the landscaping of Coleorton Hall.
