Description
Number 40, known as Friends Cottage, is a house that was once used as a Quakers' meeting place. It dates from the mid-18th century and was refurbished in the 20th century. The building is made of red brick set on a rendered plinth, topped with a plain tile roof from the 20th century that features brick gable copings and brick chimneys located at the center of the road front and between the left bays of the south front. The brickwork has been repointed in the 20th century.
The house has an L-plan layout with stairs and an outshot at the rear angle. It stands two stories tall with a cellar and has three bays on the south front. The eaves are decorated with corbelled dentils. The south front features wooden cross casement windows, all replaced in the 20th century, which have original gauged brick heads and painted keystones. There is a central 20th-century door with a rectangular fanlight above it, a similar head, and a flat wooden hood supported by brackets. The front facing the road has two bays of windows of the same type, along with a cellar window. The interior has been altered.
Attached to the southeast corner of the house is a short length of garden wall, built of brick and dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. This wall features rounded brick and stone coping and ramps down to a gate.
