Description

Gardener's cottage, adjoining garden walls, outbuildings, and summerhouse are located 100 meters west of Stapleford Hall. The cottage dates from the late 18th century and 1849, with restoration completed in 1987. It is constructed of coursed and squared ironstone and brick, featuring brick and ashlar dressings, and has hipped stone slate and plain tile roofs. The cottage is two storeys high and has two bays. The north front features a central gabled porch with bargeboards and a six-panelled door, flanked by single two-light casements. Above, there are two cross eaves gabled dormers with bargeboards and two-light casements. The west side includes a French window and, above it to the right, a leaded casement. There are lean-to sheds beyond, which contain eight casements and six doors. To the east, there is an arched opening inscribed with '1849', followed by a lean-to boiler house with a gable stack. The south side of the cottage has a lean-to greenhouse and a coped parapet with three oval leaded windows above. On either side, there are lean-to greenhouses, with the one on the right having been restored. The east and west garden walls, approximately 100 meters long, each have a central doorway with an elliptical arched head. The south garden wall features a ramped higher central section with four square piers topped with ball finials and a pair of iron gates. The northwest corner has a 19th-century lean-to shed with a central door flanked by single casements. The west side has an adjoining ramped coped wall with six piers, two oval openings, and a small square summerhouse reconstructed in 1987. The southwest corner contains a 19th-century L-plan outbuilding with round-headed openings to the north, south, and east, the northern opening featuring a 19th-century Romanesque surround. This listing is included for group value only. A nearby 20th-century bungalow to the northwest is not included in this listing.
