Description
Bassingdean (Number 3) and the adjoining house to the north (Number 1, Church Corner) are a pair of houses dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries, and possibly older origins. They are constructed of coursed squared ironstone and feature slate and pantile roofs, along with brick ridge and end stacks. The houses have a 2-unit plan and are two stories high with a five-window range.
There are recessed four-panel, part-glazed doors on either side of the center, each with overlights and brick round-arched heads, accessed by five stone steps. The ground floor has two-light casement windows at both ends, a three-light casement window to the right of center, and two small two-light windows on the left of center, one above the other, with the upper window being leaded. All ground floor windows have segmental-arched brick heads. The first floor features irregular glazing in sash windows with wooden lintels. The right half of the building has a chamfered plinth and quoins. The roof has been raised, and the eaves have been built up in brick, finished with a stepped brick eaves cornice. Inside, there are chamfered spine beams.
