Description

Walnut Tree House is a house dating from around 1610, with early and late 19th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed of ironstone with limestone ashlar bands and dressings, topped with steeply pitched slate roofs. The house features coped gables and three restored coped gable stacks.

The building has two storeys plus attics and is arranged in three bays. The west front includes a hipped 19th-century porch at the return angle, which has a Gothic panelled studded door. To the right of the porch is a 19th-century canted bay window with three glazing bar sashes. Above this bay window, there is a two-light mullioned casement to the left and a glazing bar sash to the right. Further along, to the left of the west gable, there are two tall two-light mullioned casements, and above them, a small square light with a chamfered surround.

On the east side, there is a round-headed 19th-century casement to the left and a two-light mullioned casement with a hood mould to the right. Above these, there is a 20th-century casement and another two-light mullioned casement to the right. Beyond this, there is a gabled wing featuring a square chamfered garret casement to the left.

The south side has a four-light mullioned casement on each floor to the left. To the right, beyond the south wing, there is a close-boarded door with a hood, and to its right, a 20th-century casement. Above this, there is a three-light mullioned casement. Beyond this section, there is a single-storey 19th-century addition with a sliding sash flanked by single plank doors, and above it, a 20th-century slate-hung gabled dormer.

The north side features an off-centre five-light mullioned casement flanked by single three-light mullioned casements, all with flat hoods. Above these, there are three two-light mullioned casements, and above again, a 19th-century gabled dormer with a casement.
