Description
South Lodge and the adjoining wash house at the west entrance to Stapleford Park is a lodge that has been converted into a house. It was built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The structure is made of coursed and squared ironstone and brick, featuring limestone dressings and roofs made of Collyweston slate.
The building has a chamfered plinth and elaborate bargeboards, along with a restored paired central stone ridge stack. It is one and a half storeys tall and consists of three bays arranged in a T-plan. The north front features a central gabled porch with a moulded Tudor arched doorway, a close boarded door, and a hood mould. On either side of the porch, there is a single chamfered casement window. Further along, each side has a two-light mullioned iron casement window with a moulded surround and hood mould. Above these, there are two gabled dormers, each with a two-light wooden mullioned casement featuring an elliptical head and leaded glazing.
On the east side, there is a gabled wing to the right, which includes a square bay window with a three-light mullioned casement. In the return angle, there is a Tudor arched doorway, and beyond that, to the left, there is a brick lean-to addition. In this return angle, there is a two-light mullioned wooden casement with a Tudor arched head. Further left, there is a single-storey wash house that has a square corner stack with a coped octagonal stalk. The east side of the wash house has a small casement window, while the south side features a wooden double lancet window. Above, to the right, there is a gable that contains a two-light mullioned wooden casement. The west side has two mullioned casements. This building was originally erected as a lodge for the main entrance to Stapleford Park.
