Description
The Garden Temple, built in 1767 and ruined by 1835, was designed by James Paine and altered during construction by the Hiorns brothers. It is made of ashlar and has an octagonal plan featuring eight arches and eight Ionic columns. Currently, it is partly in ruins, with four columns still partially standing. The temple is set within an octagonal enclosure that is surrounded by a low brick wall. Most of the original stones from the building remain and are scattered around the enclosure in a picturesque manner. Originally, the temple was topped with a statue of Religion by Roubiliac and contained a cenotaph by Richard Hayward.
