Description
The Old Rectory is an early 18th-century house, with 20th-century additions, situated in Burton Overy, originally facing the churchyard of St Andrew's Church. It is constructed of red brick with a Swithland slate roof, and has brick end stacks. The building follows an "H" plan, although the main entrance is now at the rear, potentially not its original location. The facade is divided into two bands with a moulded brick cornice. The front has five windows: on the wings, there are two 2-light wooden mullion and transom windows, and in the recessed centre, there are six-pane sash windows. The windows on the wings are topped with brick cambered lintels. Each wing front also features a hipped dormer. A rectangular bay window with a hipped roof and two six-pane sashes projects from the front of the recessed centre, with a low parapet. To the right of this projection, there is a single-storey wing. On the right end of the main house, above the roof of the single-storey wing, are two 2-light wooden mullion and transom windows with brick cambered lintels. The rear of the building has a rubble stone plinth and two bands, with a recessed centre. It features five 2-light wooden mullion and transom windows on the first floor and three hipped dormers in the roof. The ground floor has four six-pane sashes, and a central doorcase with a part-glazed door and fanlight containing fine glazing bars. Inside, there is colourwashed panelling, six-panelled doors, and an oak staircase with two turned balusters to each tread.
