Description

Manor House, dating from around 1300 with substantial alterations in the 17th century, is a notable example of a medieval dwelling. Constructed primarily of coursed rubble stone and squared stone with quoins, it features a Collyweston slate roof with a moulded stone ridge and projecting side stacks, alongside a brick wing end stack. The building is arranged in a “T” plan, with the gabled cross wing facing the road and the hall wing projecting to the rear, while the front elevation extends to the left. The front of the house features two and a half storeys and three windows. The cross wing to the right incorporates two 3-light casement windows and a 2-light stone mullion window with a hood mould above, with similar 2-light window over. The ground floor includes a similar 3-light casement window flanked by a lean-to porch in the cross wing's inner return angle, with a buttress to the left. A massive projecting stack is situated on the right side of the road, left of two 2-light casements above a 3-light stone mullion window with a hood mould and a further 2-light casement. A buttress separates the windows, with a lean-to to the right. Internally, a wall from around 1300 remains, separating the passage and kitchen, consisting of three equally-sized, chamfered arches. The building is also said to contain a raised base cruck and a roof truss of the open hall. The building possesses group value, and is considered 'the rare survival of a late 13th or early 14th century house' as noted in Pevsner and the Victoria County History, Volume V.
