Description

The Church of St John is a Grade II* listed building located in Rolleston. The church features a 13th-century tower, while the rest of the structure was rebuilt in 1740. It is constructed from coursed squared ironstone rubble with limestone dressings. The west tower, which is relatively small, consists of three stages, with the upper two being very low. It has square-headed paved lights on the west side and in the bell chamber, along with a plain corbel table and an embattled parapet. The nave and chancel are designed in an early English style, forming three bays that are buttressed and embattled. They feature Y-traceried lights with curved heads and hoodmoulds. The north door has a slightly ogival arch, while the south doorway is sheltered by a stone porch roof between the buttresses. The east window has three lancets.

Inside, the church has a very simple design, with a single chamfered tower arch that is almost round-arched and springs from semi-octagonal responds. There is a 13th-century octagonal font and a piscina. The roof likely dates from a restoration in the 1960s. The church also contains some late 19th-century stained glass, including traditional figures of saints in the east window and a depiction of Saint George with an angel in a Pre-Raphaelite style in the tower window. The church has 18th-century stalls. The rebuilding work was overseen by Richard Green.
