Description

The Elms is a late 18th-century house, although it has earlier origins. It is constructed of red brick with Welsh and Swithland slate roofs, featuring brick end stacks, stone coped gables, and a parapeted cornice with alternating dentils and guttae. The main block is three storeys high with a basement, and has eight-light sash windows with four-pane sashes on the second floor. The windows have gauged brick lintels. A central wooden doorcase supports a flat bracketed canopy and shelters a six-panelled door with a fanlight above, accessed by three stone steps. A stone mullion basement window is present on the right-hand end. To the rear, there are two- and one-and-a-half-storey wings; the lower part of one former wing displays diapered brickwork on a rubble stone plinth. Inside, an inglenook fireplace is present.
