Description

Woodhouse Eaves War Memorial is a First World War memorial unveiled in 1920, with later alterations following the Second World War. Constructed of Mountsorrel granite and slate, it is prominently situated on a hillside adjacent to the road at the bend in Church Hill, near to the parish church and overlooking surrounding fields. The memorial comprises a Latin cross, approximately 5 metres high, standing atop a rocky outcrop, and a lower wall, roughly 4 metres wide and 1.7 metres high, bearing inscription panels. The cross is square in section and has a rough-hewn appearance. Below the cross, the altar-like wall is composed of a three-tiered granite “frame” containing incised epitaphs and three slate panels with gilded lettering. The inscriptions list the names of those from Woodhouse Eaves who died in the Great War (1914-1919) and the Second World War (1939-1945), with the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE / IN HONOURED / MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / WOODHOUSE EAVES / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 / (NAMES) AND OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945 / (NAMES)."
