Description

This is a cottage, likely dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, although it was later refronted. It is now a two-unit cottage with a central chimney stack, and was originally two single-unit cottages. The left-hand unit appears to be an addition, representing only one bay of the original building, which is timber-framed. The timber framing is exposed in the gable and rear walls, while the front wall is brick. The gable end framing consists of several continuous posts, arch-braced at angles to upper cross beams, forming three principal panels which are subdivided by a discontinuous middle rail. The rail of the central panel is lower, and above it the end of a cross beam is exposed, suggesting a potential relationship to the insertion of stairs, although this pattern of framing is a local type. Tall panel framing with visible arch braces is found at the rear.
