Description
The Declaration is a sculpture created by Phillip King in 1961. It is made from cement mixed with marble chippings and is mounted on a horizontal steel rod. The sculpture is situated on a paved area consisting of fifteen square cement paving slabs, which were added around 1995 when the sculpture was relocated from Stonehill High School.
The exterior features a steel pole that runs through the centers of six vertically arranged geometric forms made of cast concrete with marble chippings. The outer shapes are circles, followed by two squares, and at the center are two saltire crosses. The sculpture measures 84 centimeters in height, 208 centimeters in width, and 84 centimeters in depth. It is located on the lawn to the south-west of Beaumanor Hall, which is not publicly accessible, meaning the sculpture cannot be viewed without permission.
Currently, the sculpture is in fair condition, though the square slabs show damage with chunks missing from the corners, and the original dark green color has faded to grey. The geometric shapes that were once evenly spaced along the steel rod are now arranged irregularly, and the east end of the rod appears misaligned.
The sculpture rests on fifteen square cement paving slabs that are level with the lawn. This paving is not part of the original design and is considered architecturally modest, so it is excluded from the listing.
