Description

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a parish church built in 1858 by Joseph Goddard. It is constructed of random granite rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Swithland slate roof. The nave and chancel are combined, with a western bellcote on a very steep west gable and a lean-to north aisle. The west wall has paired lancets and an oculus set in a shallow embrasure. The nave is buttressed on both the east and west sides, and there is a wide buttressed south porch designed in the Decorated style, where the moulding of the archway transitions into plain chamfered jambs. The windows include a mix of single and paired lancets, with three grouped lancets on the eastern side and paired lancets in the north aisle.

Inside, there is a wide space without a chancel arch and a five-bay north arcade featuring cylindrical shafts and double chamfered arches. The steep roof has long curved principals that support a collar. Rubble behind the altar is said to be from an earlier church. All interior fittings, including pews and the pulpit, are contemporary to the church's construction. The southeast window contains stained glass by Holland and Sons of Warwick from 1855, depicting scenes from the Old Testament in small medieval-style lozenges. The east window, which is unsigned, dates to 1868 and illustrates The Life of Christ.
