Description
The Manor House is a manor house dating from the late 16th century, extensively remodelled in the early 18th century, and with further refenestration and additions in the 19th century. It is constructed of brick with plain tile and slate roofs and stone dressings, featuring granite rubble and chamfered brick plinths, as well as moulded brick eaves. The building has three brick gable stacks internally, and two external lateral brick stacks with double stalks. It is arranged over two storeys, with five bays, and takes the form of an L-plan.
The east front has an off-centre doorcase with a Gibbs surround, a foliate decorated lintel with a multiple keystone bearing a crest, a foliate frieze, and a moulded pediment. The entrance door is a 19th-century nine-panel door, with the top six panels containing stained glass. Flanking the door are 19th-century triple-sash windows with keystoned segmental rubbed brick heads. Further to the right is a similar sash, and to the left is a further triple sash. Above the door is a 19th-century plain sash with a keystoned segmental head, flanked to the right by three similar sashes, and to the left by a 19th-century triple sash with a flat head. To the right, a set-back 18th-century rear addition features a three-light sliding sash with a segmental head, and above it, a similar sash with a flat head.
The north gable has a 19th-century sash and a half-glazed door, both with segmental heads. Above are a 19th-century cross casement and a three-light sliding sash. The south gable has two blocked windows. The rear elevation has, to the left, a two-storey stair enclosure, and to the right, a single-storey lean-to addition with a three-light sliding sash flanked to the right by a four-panel door. Above the lean-to addition is a glazing bar sash with a segmental head. In the stair enclosure return angle is a casement with a segmental head. The rear wing’s south side features a three-light sliding sash, flanked to the right by a 20th-century door, both with segmental heads. Above are two 20th-century casements, flanking a three-light sliding sash to the right.
