Description

The Wentworth Arms and adjoining stables is a public house and stable complex built in 1896, designed by C F A Voysey for Lord Lovelace of Kirkby Mallory. The building is constructed of brick and features Swithland slate hipped and gabled roofs, with three large external lateral stacks. It is a single storey plus attics and consists of two bays.

The east front includes a full-width flat-roofed bay with two five-light strip casements, connected by a veranda over a recessed entrance leading to a flat-roofed bay window that projects diagonally to the left. Above this, to the right, is a flat-roofed dormer with an eight-light strip casement. To the right of this is a pair of wooden gates that lead to the outbuildings, which contain a two-light casement.

On the south side, there is an approximately central doorway with flanking lights under a common segmental head, and above the door is a four-light strip casement. To the left, there is a three-light casement with a segmental head, and above this, to the right, is a flat-roofed dormer.

The north side features an arched recess created by external flues that contains a cellar opening, with a two-light casement above, both having segmental heads. A datestone inscribed '1896' is located above the stack.

The adjoining L-plan single storey stable range includes a pair of carriage doors flanked by single stable doors on the left, and to the right, there is a stable door and three small casements. Further to the left is a private stable with a stable door, and beyond this is a two-bay open cartshed. The interior of the building has been completely refitted around 1960.
