Description
No. 40 High Street is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof that is hipped on the left side. The building has a chimney on the right-hand gable and another at the left of the ridge. The facade is symmetrical, consisting of three storeys and three bays, and is adorned with a sandstone gutter cornice. The windows are glazing bar sashes with projecting painted stone sills and painted stone lintels that include false voussoirs and keystones.
The porch is notable for its brick pilasters that have stone bases and capitals, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with a 4-centred stone archway. The inner doorway features a timber doorcase with narrow pilasters and a door that has two raised and fielded panels above two flush panels. Inside, the house reportedly has an open-string dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and carved tread brackets, four-panel doors with reeded architraves, window shutters, and a fireplace made of black marble or slate with a cast-iron grate.
