Description

The garden walls, ironwork, summer house, and bridge at Barton Hall are notable features dating from the 18th century, 19th century, and around 1925. Constructed from sandstone and red brick, the stone ha-ha wall to the south of the Hall continues westward as a retaining wall, topped with stone coping and 18th-century urns. This wall is connected by a stone balustrade to a terrace wall along the south side of the house, which includes a double flight of steps and early 18th-century wrought iron railings, believed to be from St Mary's Gate Chapel in Derby and likely made by Robert Bakewell.

On the west side of the house, there are formal gardens featuring a pair of wrought iron gates from around 1926, acquired from the Royal Show in Derby. An attached brick wall runs along the north side and continues west with another wrought iron gate, also probably by Bakewell, which is said to have come from a demolished house in Friargate, Derby. The brick walls to the north enclose a small garden that includes a summer house built around 1933, characterized by a pyramid roof and mullioned and transomed windows, with a fake 1633 datestone above the door.

To the east, there is a further walled garden featuring a wrought iron screen on the north side, dated 1771 and said to have originated from Wollaton Hall. The east side also has gates from around 1926, designed in a medievalising portcullis style. The Hall was sold to Basil Mallender in 1925, who then developed much of the garden layout and collected ironwork from various locations.
