Description

The Chapel of St Chad is a private chapel that was formerly a parish church, rebuilt in 1714 by Samuel Taborer, likely using medieval masonry. It was altered in 1845. The building features coursed squared sandstone and ashlar, with a plain tile roof and stone coped gables that have plain kneelers topped with obelisk finials, along with a west bellcote. The corners are accentuated by pilasters and there is a moulded eaves cornice.

On the south elevation, there is a round-arched doorway with key and impost blocks. The interior is mostly plain and dates from the mid-19th century, featuring a plaster ceiling. Notable interior elements include an early 19th-century recumbent effigy of a lady wearing a wimple, a wall tablet from around 1763 on the north wall, and three 19th-century wall tablets on the south wall by Hall of Derby. There is also a squat 14th-century font with an octagonal bowl on an octagonal base with concave sides. The altar rails, designed in the 18th-century style, were created by Horrabin of Derby in 1926. The west window contains excellent stained glass dating from around 1881. The Chapel of St Chad is also designated as an Ancient Monument.
