Description

Church House, located at Nos 82 and 82A on Main Street in Kings Newton, is a house that has been converted into two separate residences. It dates from the early 18th century and features some 20th-century alterations and additions at the rear. The building is constructed of rubble stone with stone dressings, flush quoins, and a chamfered plinth, and the front elevation is painted. It has a steeply pitched plain tile roof with stone-coped gables resting on plain kneelers, and a central brick ridge stack, along with a coved eaves cornice.

The structure is two storeys high, plus a basement and garrets, and consists of three bays with a lobby entrance plan. The basement includes two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows, which are partly blocked, located on either side of three semi-circular stone steps with moulded nosings. These steps lead up to a tall moulded doorcase featuring a raised keystone, a cavetto moulded pediment, and a 20th-century half-glazed panelled door with a raised and fielded panelled overdoor. Flanking the entrance are 20th-century glazing bar top-hung casements set in similar moulded surrounds, each with cavetto moulded pediments and raised keystones.

Above the entrance, there are two similar windows in moulded surrounds with pediments but without keystones, and a central blocked pedimented opening with a plain raised surround. The rear elevation has double gables and similar pedimented windows, also featuring 20th-century additions. Inside, the property boasts panelled doors, ovolo moulded ceiling beams, and the original winder staircase located at the back of the central stack.
