Description
35 Main Street is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with some rebuilding in the early 19th century and later additions and alterations from the 20th century. The structure features box panel timber framing set on a rubble stone plinth, with corner braces on the top panels and brick nogging, as well as some red brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a large central brick ridge stack.
The cottage has a lobby entrance plan, consisting of three bays and is a single storey with an attic, plus a basement in the eastern bay. The street elevation displays two bays of timber framing on the eastern side and a larger bay of red brick with painted framing on the western side. The western bay includes a three-light segment-headed casement window. To the east, there is a central panelled door followed by a five-light 20th-century timber mullion window with leaded lights. Above this, an eyebrow dormer features a four-light 20th-century window. The east gable wall has similar 20th-century windows in the basement, ground floor, and attic, all set in original openings. The rear wall has several later brick additions, all featuring 20th-century timber mullion windows with leaded lights.
Inside, there are remnants of a winder plank baluster staircase located against the rear of the stack, and a moulded bressumer above the inglenook fireplace in the central room. On the upper floor, one truss has been embedded in the stack, indicating that the western bay may be a later addition, while another truss has had a doorway cut through it.
