Description

The lychgate and attached churchyard walls to All Saints Church were built around 1916 and feature a decorative style. The lychgate is made of ashlar and timber, topped with a steeply pitched roof covered in graduated stone slates. It has half-hipped ends and is adorned with ornately carved bargeboards and pendants. The structure includes a stone plinth with four large octagonal timber corner posts, each topped with a frieze of blind quatrefoils. These posts support large moulded brackets for the eaves.

In the center of the lychgate, there are three moulded four-centred arches with pierced spandrels that support the roof, which is further supported by piers resting on the plinth. Each pier features a small attached nookshaft that carries the arch. The outer edges of the plinth have stone walls that create a bench-like arrangement, which is adorned with an arcade of four-centred arches and pierced quatrefoils.

Between the corner piers and those supporting the roof, there are similar arches and quatrefoils. A central tie beam is inscribed with the words 'In memory of James Shuttleworth Holden, Rector 1869-1916. Erected by his friends and parishioners'. Above this, there is a simple collared roof, and each gable features a pierced timber screen. The lychgate is flanked by random rubble walls that enclose the churchyard.
