Description

Bolehill House is a Grade II listed building located in the parish of Barlow. Originally built in 1677 as an academy or school, it underwent repairs and alterations in 1797 and the 19th century. The house is constructed from coursed squared coal measures sandstone and features a shallow chamfered plinth, quoins, a coped west gable with moulded kneelers, intermediate and end ridge stacks, and a stone slated roof.

The building has an irregular T-plan layout, with the main range consisting of six bays and a lower bay at the eastern end. At the west end, there is a two-storey entrance porch that is in line with the main range but only half its width, featuring a small gable facing west. The south elevation has two storeys and seven bays, with the three western bays being more prominent and having a lower eaves than the remaining three bays.

The west end includes a doorway to the porch with a quoined surround and a planked door. Each bay has a 3-light window on the ground floor and a 2-light window above, all featuring chamfered mullions and glazing bar casements with gothic intersecting heads. The ground floor openings are topped by a continuous dripmoulding that also surrounds the doorway and includes a label stop.

The three eastern bays contain an entrance bay with a quoined doorway and a planked door, above which is a pointed arched opening with a moulded surround and glazing bars. This doorway and the two 3-light chamfer mullioned windows to the east are also beneath a continuous dripmoulding, while the two remaining first-floor windows are 2-light openings, all showcasing gothic glazing. The lower bay at the eastern end is plain. A plaque above the west door at first-floor level reads, "This Acad'y was Built by the inhabitatns of Barl'w in the year 1677 and was duly repaired in 1797 Demms(?) Mas't."
