Description

The cottages at 46 and 48 Town Lane date from the 18th century and are built of coursed gritstone with gritstone dressings. They have stone slate roofs and gritstone gable end stacks.

The north elevation displays different features for each cottage. At No 48, the doorway has substantial stone jambs and lintel, leading to a 20th-century panelled door. To the left is a former mullion window, now fitted with 19th-century sash windows. Two similar windows are above, and two 18th-century windows are on the top floor; these have square section mullions and small panel fixed lights, one with a glazing bar sash. At No 46, the doorway has thinner stone jambs and lintel, and incorporates a 19th-century four-panelled door. To the right is a two-light mullion window with a 19th-century sash and fixed light, originally three-lights. A three-light stone mullion window is positioned above, and a similar window is found on the top floor, featuring 18th-century small parted fixed lights and one glazing bar sash.
