Description
There are 15 lamp standards located along the north-west side of Broad Walk in Buxton. These lamp standards date from the mid-19th century and were converted and restored in the 20th century. They are part of Sir Joseph Paxton's design for Broad Walk and were manufactured by R & J Dempster Ltd in Manchester.
The lamp standards are made of cast iron and feature sectioned glass lanterns from the 20th century, topped with acorn finials. Each lamp has cross bars on a tapering two-tier shaft, which is reeded at the top and fluted below, resting on an octagonal base. The base is inscribed with "REVO TIPTON" above the cross bars and "J DEMPSTER AND SON" on the fluted section. It is noted that the left-hand cross bar on the 11th and 13th lamp posts is missing.
The lamp standards are numbered 8503 to 8517 by the Electricity Board. The Broad Walk itself is characterized by a series of Victorian villas and provides views overlooking the Pavilion Gardens.
