Description

Grinlow Tower, also known as Solomon's Temple, is a folly built in 1840 for Samuel Mycock. It was rebuilt in 1894 and restored in 1987. The tower is constructed from rubble limestone with tooled gritstone dressings and has a circular plan. The exterior features two storeys, with a round-headed doorway accessed by four steps. Impost and sill bands connect to seven round-headed openings with keystones. Above the doorway is a blind circular opening, with seven additional blind round-headed openings linked by a chamfered sill band. The structure has ashlar courses leading to the eaves, a moulded eaves band, and battlements. Inside, there is a stone spiral staircase with an iron handrail. The tower was originally built to provide work for the town's unemployed.
