Description

The walls and gates to Milnthorp Homes were built in 1904 and are made of coursed rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings. The low wall is 140 meters long and features ashlar chamfered coping. It includes two sets of gates and 16 intermediary piers that are flush with the front wall, arranged in a pattern of 5:16:1. The gate piers are square with moulded tops and concave pyramidal caps topped with ball finials. These structures were designed as an integral part of the architectural layout of the almshouses and are included for their group value with Milnthorp Homes.
