Description

A pair of semi-detached villas or boarding houses, now a hotel and flats, dating from the mid-19th century, with 20th-century additions. They were possibly designed by Sir Joseph Paxton for the Duke of Devonshire. The buildings are constructed of coursed dressed millstone grit with ashlar dressings, and have Welsh slate half-hipped roofs with three stone stacks.

The buildings are three storeys and have attics. They feature a chamfered plinth and a six-window range overall. Each villa has a central doorway with wooden pilaster surrounds and glazed doors with overlights. Above are single two-over-two sash windows within moulded surrounds and with hoods. Either side are two-storey canted bay windows with flat lead roofs. Above the sash windows is a plaque inscribed "Cambridge Villas." Above this again, Number 20 has three gabled dormers; the central one has a single sash, and the outer ones have two sashes.

The left return has a two-window range with two-over-two sash windows and a canted bay window to the left. The right return is similar, with a bay window to the right.

The interior was not inspected.

The Broad Walk contains a series of Victorian villas and a walkway overlooking the Pavilion Gardens, originally designed around 1850 by Paxton. Many of the surrounding houses were built by speculative developers. Some are reportedly designed in detail by Paxton’s pupil Edward Milner from 1871, and were built by Saunders & Woolcott of London for the 7th Duke. The buildings are included for group value.
