Description
The Quadrant comprises a row of shops with offices above, built around 1860 and extended in 1905, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of dressed gritstone with ashlar dressings and has Welsh slate roofs with grouped stone stacks. An eaves band and moulded eaves cornice run along the top. The three-storey, stepped street facade has nine windows with curved single window ends and two window returns, the return on the left now having six windows. The facade is divided by tall pilaster strips featuring vermiculated rustication and curved brackets beneath the ground floor and eaves. The nine shop fronts are mostly renewed in the 20th century. The first floor has tall three-light mullion windows with tooled ashlar surrounds, and above these, three round-headed windows with tooled surrounds, keystones, and projecting sills on stone brackets. Most windows retain their original casements. A curved entrance on the lower right has a doorway with a Tuscan Doric columned surround, entablature, a single window above, and another round-headed window above that. The right return has two similar windows on the upper floors and a single-storey glazed addition from 1905 below, with an ornate iron parapet. A curved bay on the upper left has a three-light mullion window to the ground floor and single windows above. The left return has six single windows in matching tooled surrounds. The interior was not inspected.
