Description

The brick kiln at the former Oakwell brickworks, located on Derby Road in Ilkeston, was built between 1900 and 1913 and is of the Hoffman type. It is constructed of pink brick and features a corrugated iron roof with a segmental profile, topped by a narrow, slightly raised semi-circular canopy that has open ends. The kiln has a rectangular shape with rounded ends, and its walls taper inward. There are two tiers of openings: the lower tier includes fourteen round-headed entrances that lead to two parallel segment vaulted furnaces, which connect at the rounded ends. The upper tier consists of ten square openings, although one opening on the south side has partially collapsed. The upper openings have chamfered sills. The Oakwell brickworks began production around 1879 and continued until the 1960s.
