Description

These are a symmetrical pair of two-storeyed stone houses, built around 1850 by Joseph Paxton. The houses feature a central gable with a window containing three arched lights in a plain surround. Open porches are positioned on each side, featuring rusticated openings with semi-circular heads and keyblocks on both the front and returned sides. Recessed wings flank the sides, each with a window featuring a plain dog-eared lintel above a semi-circular headed window with a wheel fanlight. False quoins are present on the sides, and the buildings have bold open eaves and gable verges, topped with a low-pitch slate roof. The Swiss Cottages, together with a footbridge to the north and Bridge House, form a group of buildings with group value.
