Description
This icehouse, located 5 yards to the north-west of the remains of Old Snelston Hall, was built around 1827 and designed by L N Cottingham. It is constructed from red brick with stone copings. The structure features a circular well that measures 4.5 metres in both diameter and depth, built with a large cavity wall. The 30-inch cavity is capped at the top with large stone slabs. The entrance is located at the top of the dome, at ground level, and is surrounded by stone, originally fitted with hinged wooden doors. The original design by Cottingham is preserved in the Record Office at Derbyshire County Council.
